BNSSG CAC

Funded Community Projects

The BNSSG Communities Against Cancer Programme is supporting community organisations to improve cancer awareness, prevention and early diagnosis across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, outside Inner City and East Bristol.

The programme is funded by the SWAG Cancer Alliance, via the VCSE Alliance, and overseen by the BNSSG Integrated Care Board (ICB).

These projects work in trusted community settings to challenge myths and fear, share accessible and culturally relevant information, and help people feel confident to take the next step—whether that’s speaking to a health professional, booking screening or getting support to navigate NHS services.

Project Overview

African Voices Forum

African Voices Forum will deliver a six-month cancer awareness and early-diagnosis campaign combining digital communications with in-person, gender-specific engagement in barbershops and beauty salons. The campaign will focus on African and Black communities living in deprived areas of Bristol outside the inner city and the East locality, with the aim of improving awareness and encouraging earlier engagement with cancer services.

Bread of Life Ministries

Bread of Life Ministries will run a year-long cancer awareness project for Black and minoritised communities in Emersons Green, Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke and potentially other parts of South Gloucestershire. The programme will include community events and prostate cancer awareness sessions for Black men, involving healthcare professionals and people with lived experience. Interpreters will be available to help make the information accessible.

Bristol Muslim Cultural Society

Bristol Muslim Cultural Society will deliver two connected strands of activity over 12 months: youth-led cancer awareness sessions focused on HPV and cervical screening, and a community cricket tournament to raise men’s awareness of prostate cancer.

For All Healthy Living Company

For All Healthy Living Company will deliver Say It Out Loud, a community-led cancer awareness campaign in Bournville, Weston-super-Mare. The project will use creative storytelling and a public exhibition to normalise conversations about cancer and link those conversations to prevention and early screening.

Knowle West Health Park

Knowle West Health Park will deliver a 12-month cancer prevention project using an asset-based community development approach to promote cancer awareness and early action. Activities will focus on reducing fear and addressing myths and barriers around cancer and screening, strengthening relationships between health professionals and the local community, and empowering residents to understand how everyday lifestyle choices can help reduce cancer risk. The programme will begin with community focus groups to identify concerns and accessibility challenges; subsequent sessions will be designed in response to what residents say. A wider community engagement event, co-designed with residents, will take place at the end of the year.

People First

People First will deliver a 12-month cancer awareness and early-diagnosis project for people with learning disabilities and neurodivergent people across the BNSSG area, focused on communities outside Bristol’s Inner City and East locality. The project will combine monthly group sessions, one-to-one support and practical help navigating NHS systems, embedding cancer prevention and early diagnosis into People First’s core delivery model.

Nilaari Agency

Nilaari will deliver a targeted, community-led cancer prevention and early-diagnosis programme across South and North Bristol. Building on the previously delivered ‘Black Women Talk Health’ and ‘Black Men Talk Health’ models, the programme will use peer-led discussions, accessible health information and culturally relevant messaging, alongside practical guidance on navigating GP services and non-judgemental myth-busting.

The Care Forum

The Care Forum will deliver pop-up cancer awareness sessions in trusted community settings, specifically targeting Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities. Sessions will cover cancer signs and symptoms, myth-busting, what is normal and what is not, lifestyle-related cancer risks, and screening awareness. Delivery will be trauma-informed, culturally appropriate and shaped by lived experience. The project will also offer one-to-one confidence-building and navigation support, alongside the distribution of culturally adapted resources.
